Throughout history there have been certain armies that changed the face of warfare. Highly trained and toughened soldiers that fought with intensity and fear factor that would send shivers down your spine. From fanaticism to discipline these legendary armies are what many aspire to be like. If chaotic battlefield brutality is more your thing or veteran-like fighting formations then these armies are for you.
1. Spartan Hoplites
Combat bred these soldiers from birth. Discipline, endurance, and holding formation made Spartan hoplites nightmares in melee. The only thing more terrifying than fighting one Spartan was fighting two.
2. Viking Berserkers
Into battle they rushed with such frightening fervor it nearly rocked ancient battlefields. Combine rage with fearlessness and heavy weaponry, and you’ve got a beast of a warrior. Their ferocity echoed to every corner of the world.
3. Roman Praetorian Guard
The personal bodyguards of Roman emperors only got selected if they were exceptional. The best of the best that Rome had to offer served as imperial protectors. Good luck trying to cross someone powerful enough to have them pissed.

They were called “Immortals” because it seemed as though there were always 10,000 strong. When one fell, another simply replaced him. No matter how many Immortals you took down in battle, there were always more

A strong code governed these fierce Japanese warriors. Honor, discipline, and skill at arms made samurai some of the finest warriors in history. Don’t mistake their swords for the only danger.
6. Assyrians
The Assyrians built one of the earliest professional armies, combining strict discipline with advanced weapons, siege engineering, and organized logistics. They expanded their empire through coordinated campaigns that emphasized speed, intimidation, and total battlefield control. Their military system reshaped how ancient states waged war and influenced armies for centuries afterward.

7. Mongol Horse Archers
Mobility and bow skills combined to make Mongol horse archers devastating to fight. They could rain chaos from afar, then ride away undetected. Try catching something as fast as wind with a blade.
8. Sherden
The Sherden swordsmen were a feared Bronze Age warrior group, likely originating in the Mediterranean, recognized by their horned helmets, round shields, and heavy swords. They appeared across the eastern Mediterranean during the Late Bronze Age collapse, fighting major powers like Egypt and the Hittites and later serving as elite guards for Egyptian pharaohs. Their mobility, aggressive combat style, and presence in multiple conflicts made them one of the most iconic and mysterious forces of their era.

9. Spartan Krypteia
Survival of the fittest were these covert operatives. Stealthy and cunning, Krypteia would intimidate and take down the resistance. If they were sent for you, your days are numbered in single digits.
10. Ottoman Janissaries
The Janissaries were one of the first modern standing infantry units armed with guns in Europe. Their rigorous training and unit cohesion stomped on feudal levies. Empires shook when they marched.
11. Sacred Band of Thebes
The Sacred Band were an elite force made up of pairs that fought one another. Their motivation and ferocity in combat were the stuff of legends. You’ll have to break both their shield and spirit.

12. Viking Varangian
The Varangian Guard served as the personal bodyguards to the Byzantine Emperors. Renowned for both their loyalty and brute strength. Some said these Vikings had axes big enough to take down a horse.

Legionaries that have served for many years become veterans. Seasoned and battle tested, veterans were cunning and level headed in battle. Sure you can ambush new recruits. Don’t expect the same from veterans.

Aztec wrriors were an elite military order whose job was to try and take enemies alive. Used for ritual sacrifice, these warriors were as brutish as they come. They kept body parts as trophies after conquests.

An elite Ismaili order from the medieval Islamic world, famous for individual combat, stealth, and targeted killings, often operating alone or in very small numbers. They became legendary for personal discipline, fearlessness, and psychological warfare.
16. Norse Shieldmaidens
Don’t let these women fool you. Wielding axes and shields as well as the next warrior, these Norse Shieldmaidens were incredible in battle. Let’s just say you would never see them coming until it’s too late.
17. Knights Templar
Knights Templar were warrior monks of the highest order. Fighting in the name of their religion, these men protected the Crusades with skill and heavy armor. They were precise, focused, and very efficient when it came to taking foes down.
18. Macedonians
Veteran soldiers of the feared Macedonian Phalanx armed with sarissas. Moving as one, these men turned open battlefields into wastelands. You did not want to be on the opposite side of them in a battle.
19. Spartan Royal Guard
The Spartans weren’t afraid to show who the royalty was. They were personal guards that protected Spartan kings during war campaigns and religious processions. Only the best of the best were chosen to be the Royal Guards.
