1. Joe Theismann’s Leg Snaps On National TV (1985)

In a single hit by Lawrence Taylor, Theismann’s right tibia and fibula were shattered. Lawrence Taylor immediately waved for medical help, visibly disturbed, and the injury instantly ended Theismann’s NFL career.

2. Kevin Ware’s Bone-Protruding Leg Break (2013)

Ware suffered an open fracture of the tibia during the NCAA tournament. His bone visibly pierced the skin in front of millions watching live. Teammates collapsed in tears on the court at the sight, and the trauma caused the game to pause for over 10 minutes.

3. Sid Vicious’s Leg Shatters In Wrestling Match (2001)

After an awkward landing from a top-rope kick, Sid Vicious suffered a compound fracture of his tibia and fibula mid-match. The injury was so visually disturbing that fans screamed from the crowd. The footage remains one of wrestling’s most infamous injuries.

4. Alex Smith’s Life-Threatening Compound Fracture (2018)

Smith got his compound fracture of both the tibia and fibula on the same date and location as Joe Theismann’s. A flesh-eating bacterial infection nearly led to leg amputation, but Smith eventually returned to play in the NFL, defying all odds.

5. Zach Miller’s Knee Dislocates And Artery Tears (2017)

Not only did Miller's left knee dislocate, but it also tore the popliteal artery. The touchdown he caught during the injury was later ruled incomplete, and even though he learned to walk again, he never returned to football.

6. Paul George’s Gruesome Leg Break During USA Scrimmage (2014)

George broke his tibia during a Team USA exhibition game. His leg bent at a 90-degree angle after landing awkwardly, and the injury caused an immediate halt to the game. It was witnessed by NBA stars and coaches who gasped in horror.

7. Darryl Stingley Paralyzed After Hit By Jack Tatum (1978)

A brutal preseason hit compressed Stingley’s spinal cord, and the injury left him permanently quadriplegic. The hit was legal at the time, but led to widespread debate over safety. Stingley and Tatum never reconciled, despite attempts.

8. Dennis Byrd’s Paralysis On The Field (1992)

Byrd collided with a teammate and fractured his C5 vertebra. After the collision, he was paralyzed from the waist down. He later regained the ability to walk, and a movie was made about his life and recovery.

9. Gordon Hayward’s Dislocated Ankle And Broken Tibia (2017)

Minutes into his Celtics debut, Hayward suffered a dislocated ankle and fractured tibia. The injury was visible as his foot twisted completely out of position, and the crowd, announcers, and players were visibly shaken in real time.

10. Marc Savard’s Career-Ending Concussion (2010)

A blindside hit left Savard with post-concussion syndrome. After the injury, he never played another full NHL game. As for the hit, it sparked massive changes in NHL rules on head contact. Savard later said he suffered memory loss and mental fog for years.

11. Clint Malarchuk’s Throat Slashed By Skate Blade (1989)

During a hockey game, a skate blade severed Malarchuk’s jugular vein, and he lost over a pint of blood on the ice before help arrived. The team’s trainer saved his life by pinching the artery closed.

12. Eduardo Da Silva’s Leg Break From Horror Tackle (2008)

A reckless challenge snapped Eduardo’s fibula and dislocated his ankle. Broadcasters refused to replay the injury because of how severe it was. He missed nearly a year of professional play but eventually returned to score in the Champions League.

13. Moises Alou’s Ankle Snaps Rounding Third (1993)

Moises Alou suffered a compound ankle fracture while trying to score from second base. The injury abruptly ended what had been a career-best season. Despite the gruesome break, he returned the next year and made the All-Star team.

14. Napoleon McCallum’s Knee And Ligament Detonation (1994)

McCallum’s knee hyperextended backward during a tackle on Monday Night Football. Multiple ligaments were torn, instantly ending his professional career. The visual of his leg bending backward became infamous in NFL history.

15. Anderson Silva’s Leg Break On Kick Attempt (2013)

While attempting a leg kick, Silva's shin bone snapped in half. The fracture ended his title rematch and required immediate surgery, and the sound of the break was clearly audible on the live broadcast. After recovering, Silva returned to fighting.

16. Djibril Cissé’s Two Career-Threatening Leg Breaks (2004 & 2006)

Cissé broke both legs within two years—once with Liverpool, once with France—and doctors feared he might lose his leg after the second injury. He later credited his fast healing to sheer mental focus.

19. David Busst’s Leg Break (1996)

During a corner kick, a collision shattered both Busst’s tibia and fibula. He lost so much blood on the field that players had to look away. The match was delayed for 9 minutes to clean the blood, and Busst never returned to professional play.

20. Teddy Bridgewater’s Non-Contact Knee Explosion (2016)

Bridgewater tore his ACL and dislocated his knee without contact during practice. The injury was so severe that medics feared he could lose his leg. He later made a comeback and started games for multiple teams.
