20 Greatest Game 7s in NBA Playoff History

When One Game Carries the Whole Season

Game 7 is where basketball stops pretending to be patient. There’s no “next time,” no chance to regroup two nights later, and no room for a bad quarter that quietly disappears in the series average. The greatest NBA Game 7s are remembered because they compress everything into one night: legends, collapses, impossible shots, exhausted stars, and fans who age several years before the final buzzer. Here are the 20 greatest Game 7s in NBA history.

1. 2016 NBA Finals: Cavaliers vs. Warriors

Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals is one of the most famous games in league history. The Cavaliers completed the first 3-1 comeback in Finals history against a 73-win Warriors team, which made the stakes feel enormous before tipoff even arrived. LeBron James’ chase-down block on Andre Iguodala, Kyrie Irving’s late three, and Cleveland’s first NBA title turned the night into instant mythology.

2. 1988 Eastern Semifinals: Celtics vs. Hawks

The 1988 duel between Larry Bird and Dominique Wilkins is still one of the greatest individual battles ever played in a Game 7. Wilkins kept attacking with explosive scoring, while Bird answered with a fourth quarter that felt almost rude in its confidence. Boston survived 118-116, but Atlanta pushed the defending Eastern powers to the absolute edge.

Portland led by 15 in the final period, and for a while, it looked like Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant might fall short of their first Finals together. Then the Lakers stormed back, capped by Kobe’s famous lob to Shaq as Staples Center exploded.

4. 2019 Eastern Semifinals: Raptors vs. 76ers

Kawhi Leonard’s shot against Philadelphia may be the loudest bounce in NBA history. Game 7 was tight, physical, and tense, with both teams grinding through every possession like the ball owed them money. Then Leonard’s corner jumper hit the rim four times before dropping, sending Toronto forward and Philadelphia home in disbelief.

5. 2010 NBA Finals: Lakers vs. Celtics

The 2010 Game 7 was gritty, ugly, and full of missed shots, which made it feel even more intense. Kobe Bryant struggled from the field but fought on the glass, while Pau Gasol delivered one of the toughest performances of his career. Los Angeles won 83-79, giving Kobe his fifth ring and the Lakers' revenge for 2008.

6. 1969 NBA Finals: Celtics vs. Lakers

The 1969 Finals Game 7 had Bill Russell’s last game, Wilt Chamberlain on the other side, and balloons in the rafters at the Forum that never got to celebrate a Lakers title. Boston entered as the aging dynasty, while Los Angeles had home court and star power. The Celtics won 108-106, and Russell walked away as a champion one final time.

The 1994 Finals Game 7 was a bruising, low-scoring fight between Hakeem Olajuwon’s Rockets and Patrick Ewing’s Knicks. Houston won 90-84, giving the franchise its first championship and cementing Olajuwon’s postseason brilliance. John Starks had a miserable shooting night after a strong series, which became one of the painful what-ifs in Knicks history.

8. 2006 Western Semifinals: Mavericks vs. Spurs

The 2006 Mavericks-Spurs Game 7 was a Texas heavyweight fight with championship-level intensity. Dirk Nowitzki forced overtime with a clutch three-point play after Manu Ginóbili had briefly put San Antonio ahead. Dallas eventually won 119-111, knocking out the defending champions and changing how people talked about Nowitzki’s playoff toughness.

Boston won 111-102 in a hot, hostile Boston Garden, with Larry Bird completing a series that helped define his rivalry with Magic Johnson. The game had physicality, tension, and the feeling that the entire league’s balance of power was on the floor.

10. 1970 NBA Finals: Knicks vs. Lakers

The 1970 Finals Game 7 is remembered forever because Willis Reed limped onto the court before tipoff and turned Madison Square Garden into a thunderstorm. Reed scored only a few early baskets, but his presence gave the Knicks a jolt they never lost. Walt Frazier then played one of the greatest Game 7 performances ever, finishing with 36 points and 19 assists.

11. 2021 Eastern Semifinals: Bucks vs. Nets

The 2021 Bucks-Nets Game 7 felt like it hinged on Kevin Durant’s shoe size. Durant hit a spectacular late shot to force overtime, but his toe was on the line, making it a two instead of a three. Milwaukee survived in overtime, and the win became a major step toward Giannis Antetokounmpo’s first championship.

12. 2013 NBA Finals: Heat vs. Spurs

After Ray Allen’s famous Game 6 shot saved Miami, Game 7 still had to finish the job. LeBron James answered with 37 points, including the late jumper that helped seal the Heat’s second straight title. Tim Duncan had a chance near the rim late and reacted with visible frustration after missing, a rare emotional moment from one of the calmest stars ever.

The defending champion Rockets were on the road against a Suns team that had them on the brink. That shot helped send the Rockets forward on a playoff run that ended with another championship.

James Harden, Dwight Howard, and the Rockets moved on, while the Clippers were left with another painful chapter in their playoff history.
