The Greatest Tools Mankind Ever Invented

While they don't always get the credit they deserve, tools have shaped our civilization. From the moment that an early human grabbed a stone to carve a piece of wood, tools have advanced our species in leaps and bounds. They turned us into engineers, scientists, artists, creators, and so much more.

The history of tools is also the story of society's progress, extending our reach and abilities, making us stronger and healthier, and helping us develop a better understanding of the world. While countless tools have changed the course of history, a few truly stand out as having permanently altered our futures.

Among the most history-defining and prominent tools are the wheel, the printing press, and the microchip. Let's look at how each represents a giant leap in the world and redefined what it means to be human.

The Wheel: Civilization's Engine

The wheel was invented around 3500 BCE in Mesopotamia and revolutionized how we moved objects and engineered and built structures. It truly shaped the world around us. The wheel was originally used for pottery, and the first version was solid wooden disks that were used to craft uniform clay vessels.

It didn't take long for someone to realize that attaching a wheel to an axle creates a rolling motion, and the rest was history. The wheel enabled carts and chariots, facilitated trade, and contributed to war efforts across continents. It became the foundation of urban planning and transportation systems.

Every monumental technological leap can trace its lineage to this single tool. The wheel made life easier and gave civilizations the momentum to expand and evolve.

The Printing Press: The Gift of Knowledge

In the 15th century, Johannes Gutenberg introduced the movable-type printing press to the masses and ignited one of the most noteworthy revolutions in history. This revolution was based on the mass dissemination of knowledge.

Before Gutenberg's invention, books were copied by hand through a painstaking process often performed by monks. Literacy was a privilege of the elites, but the printing press changed that overnight. Once books were able to be produced quickly and cheaply, information became democratized.

The printing press fueled the Renaissance, powered the Reformation, and gave way to modern science. Ideas travelled faster than ever before, and information and knowledge could outlive empires.

The Microchip: The Brain Behind the Modern Age

The microchip connected and accelerated human history in a way that few tools ever could. It was invented in 1958 by Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce, the integrated circuit condensed entire circuits into a small, single piece of silicon.

This tool gave birth to the digital age and an information age that would make the printing press jealous. It revolutionized every facet of our existence in every corner of the world. It made real-time communication across the globe possible, automated industries, and brought computing power into homes.

Similar to the printing press, it democratized information but at a rate that was once thought unimaginable. The microchip continues to evolve, driving the frontiers of medical science, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and space exploration.

The greatest tools in history do more than solve common problems. They redefine and reshape humanity. The wheel provided us with motion, the printing press with freedom of thought, and the microchip with connection and advancement. The invention of each was a pivotal turning point in history and gave birth to new possibilities.
