Meet The Woman Who Caused A King to Become A Commoner

Meet The Woman Who Caused A King to Become A Commoner

File:Wallis Simpson headshot.jpgWallis Simpson is one of the most debated figures in modern British history. She was an American whose torrid and substantial relationship with King Edward VIII changed the course of the monarchy. This isn't just a run-of-the-mill romantic scandal where a king fell in love with a commoner. Their union triggered a constitutional crisis that reshaped the British Royal Family.

To understand why a king would give up his throne for her, you have to look at who Wallis Simpson was and how her presence was an affront to royal tradition that had been in place for centuries. As with most historical love stories, there's a lot more to this relationship than meets the eye.

Let's explore Wallis Simpson and how her life and actions challenged established institutions and created a ripple effect that was quite profound.

Controversial From the Start

Born Bessie Wallis Warfield in 1896 in Pennsylvania, Wallis Simpson was raised in modest surroundings. Her early life was rife with financial inscurity, but she was adept at moving within social circles that introduced her to the influential elites.

She first married U.S. naval officer Earl Winfield Spencer Jr., but their relationship was undermined by alcoholism and prolonged absences. She then married shipping executive Ernest Simpson, who provided some stability and standing in London's upper crust. It was in this environment in the 1930s that she met the then-Prince of Wales, Edward. He was instantly drawn to her, and they were rumoured to be romantically involved by 1934, even though she was still married.

She Rocked the Monarchy

Edward ascended to the throne in 1936, and the problem with Simpson was unavoidable. She had filed for divorce from Ernest Simpson, which signalled her intention to marry Edward. But British law and the Church of England were united in their disapproval and refusal of this relationship. As king, Edward could not marry a divorced individual if their former spouse was still alive.

An unprecedented constitutional crisis followed. The political establishment believed that their union would undermine the moral authority of the church and the monarchy, and the nation was fragile at the time, as it was only a few years before WWII.

Edward chose Simpson over the crown. On December 11, 1936, he abdicated during a historic radio broadcast. His brother, George VI, became the king, and the royal lineage shifted.

Post-Crown Life

Edward eventually became the Duke of Windsor. He married Simpson in 1937 in France, which was frowned upon by the monarchy, to say the least. The couple spent much of their lives living in France, the U.S., and the Bahamas.

Simpson never received any royal title, which was a constant reminder of her controversial actions. Some saw her as a social climber, and others treated her as a scapegoat for a king who was unwilling to conform and accept his responsibility.

Simpson disrupted monarchial tradition and altered the course of British history. Whether she's a villain or the center of a beautiful love story is up to historians. Regardless, she remains a polarizing figure, and her story lives at the intersection of love, duty, and royal tradition.
