1. Rockefeller Family

The Rockefeller story begins with John D. Rockefeller Sr., who became the world's first dollar billionaire and one of the wealthiest people in history. The family established an oil monopoly, controlling an estimated 90 to 95 percent of all oil refining and distribution in the US, making them extremely powerful. They founded institutions, funded scientific advancements, and created many iconic public spaces.

2. The Medicis

The Medicis are known as the family that built Florence through their patronage of architects and artists during the Renaissance. They ruled Florence for nearly three centuries, and their power went beyond, with a handful of popes and two French queens who gave birth to several kings being of Medici blood.

3. Astor Family

The Astor family is one of the most significant dynasties in American and British history. They built immense wealth on the fur trade and Manhattan real estate, investing fur trade profits into then-cheap land, anticipating northern expansion in areas that would later become Times Square and Central Park. John Jacob Astor I was the founder of the fortune and one of the first multi-millionaires in the US.

4. The Rothschilds

The Rothschilds are the most famous European banking family. Pioneers of international finance, they amassed unprecedented wealth and political influence. They financed major world events like the Napoleonic Wars, gained control of companies like Rio Tinto and De Beers, and invested heavily in energy and wine. They've also had a long history of supporting Jewish causes, playing a role in the establishment of Israel.

5. House of Al Thani

House of Al Thani is the ruling family of Qatar. They're powerful and immensely rich, having amassed their wealth from Qatar's natural gas deposit, investing in the infrastructure to turn it into Liquefied Natural Gas. The dynasty is an absolute monarchy, and its decisions have a significant impact on the world stage.

6. The Qin Dynasty

The Qin Dynasty ruled China for a brief but significant period. Under this family, the various warring states of China were unified under a centralized imperial system. Major iconic engineering feats, including the Lingqu Canal and the Terracotta Army, were completed under the Qin Dynasty.

7. The Vanderbilt Family

The Vanderbilt family was one of the wealthiest in American history. Their massive fortune was founded in shipping and mainly built on the burgeoning railroad industry during the Gilded Age (late 19th and early 20th centuries). The family built and owned some of the most extravagant estates in the US, including the Biltmore Estate and the Fifth Avenue Mansions.

8. The House of Saud

The House of Saud is the ruling family of Saudi Arabia. Their influence is immense, stemming from their control over the world's largest oil reserves.

9. The du Pont Family

The du Pont Family is one of the oldest influential families in the US. Their fortune was built on gunpowder and explosives, later growing into a diversified industrial and chemical giant, the DuPont Company. The company remains a global giant.

10. The House of Osman

The House of Osman ruled the Ottoman Empire from the late 13th century until the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1922. It's one of the longest-lasting dynasties in history. At its height, it controlled vast territories across southeastern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

11. The Romanovs

The Romanovs were the final royal family of Russia before the revolution in 1917. Under this family, Russia was transformed from a medieval state into a major European power and a vast empire.

12. The House of Habsburg

The House of Habsburg ruled over much of Europe from the late Middle Ages to the early 20th century. They accumulated their power mostly through strategic marriages. The Austro-Hungarian Empire, ruled by the last Habsburg Emperor Charles I, collapsed at the end of World War I.

13. The House of Windsor

The House of Windsor is the current British royal family. It's a branch of a long line of Germanic royal houses, but became its own uniquely English branch after WWI. The House of Windsor is not only the royal family of the United Kingdom, but that of 14 other independent countries, known as the Commonwealth.

14. The Ming Dynasty

The Ming Dynasty ruled China from 1368 to 1644, following the collapse of the Mongol-led Yuan Dynasty. It's known for restoring Chinese traditional culture, its imperial expansion, and undertaking the most extensive and visible work on the Great Wall of China.

15. The Fugger Family

The Fugger family was a German banking and merchant dynasty whose fortune rapidly grew through a combination of trade, finance, and industrial investments. The Al Nahyan family is the ruling dynasty of Abu Dhabi and, by extension, the presidential family of the United Arab Emirates.
