20 of History's Most Famous Love Triangles

When Romance Gets Complicated Fast

We like to think of the past as a simpler time, but feelings were never necessarily easy to navigate. Love caused heartbreak, scandal, and sometimes it changed politics, inspired literature, or altered entire royal family trees in ways that make modern situationships feel straightforward. If you think dating now is complicated, history would really like a word. Here are 20 of history’s most famous love triangles, all packed with enough drama to survive for centuries.

1. Henry VIII, Catherine of Aragon, & Anne Boleyn

This is one of the most famous triangles in history because it didn’t just wreck a marriage; it helped reshape a country. Henry VIII’s determination to leave Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn led to a huge religious and political break with Rome. Catherine refused to quietly disappear, which only made everything more tense.

2. Julius Caesar, Pompey, & Julia

This wasn't a love triangle in the classic sense of two people both wanting the same person, but there was plenty of love between these three. Julia was the daughter of Julius Caesar, and he offered her hand to his ally, Pompey, to solidify their political alliance. Despite their 30-year age gap, Pompey and Julia developed a deep, loving bond, and she was considered the human tie holding the empire together. Only after she died in childbirth did things start to unravel, leading to the Roman civil war.

3. Mark Antony, Octavia, & Cleopatra

Mark Antony really knew how to complicate both his love life and international politics at the same time. He was married to Octavia, who also happened to be the sister of Octavian, Cleopatra's archenemy, while remaining deeply attached to Cleopatra. That arrangement didn't exactly help keep the peace in Rome. Once Cleopatra stayed central in Antony’s life, the triangle became part romance, part propaganda, and part empire-shaking disaster.

4. Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, & Ptolemy XIII

This triangle mixed marriage, power, and survival in a way that could only happen in ancient royal politics. Cleopatra was married to her brother Ptolemy XIII, but her alliance and romance with Julius Caesar changed everything around her. What might sound like a personal entanglement was also a struggle over who would control Egypt. That combination of love, ambition, and political danger is exactly why this one still stands out.

5. Napoléon, Joséphine, & Marie-Louise

Napoleon loved Joséphine, but love only goes so far when an emperor decides he needs an heir. After divorcing her, he married Marie-Louise of Austria, creating one of the most discussed romantic rearrangements of his era. Joséphine remained emotionally important to him, which gave the whole thing a lingering sadness.

6. King David, Bathsheba, & Uriah

This is one of the oldest and most famous triangles in recorded history, and it’s not exactly a cheerful one. David desired Bathsheba even though she was married to Uriah, his loyal soldier. After getting Bathsheba, David had Uriah killed to cover up the adultery. The story remains famous because it shows how destructive desire can become when power is involved.

7. Edward II, Isabella of France, & Roger Mortimer

This one was a genuine royal mess with major political consequences. Isabella of France was married to Edward II, but her relationship with Roger Mortimer became one of the most notorious scandals in medieval England. What started as a marital breakdown turned into rebellion, deposition, and a complete shift in power.

8. Nelson, Emma Hamilton, & Sir William Hamilton

This is one of the most famous love triangles in British history, and it had all the drama people expect from the category. Emma Hamilton was married to Sir William Hamilton, but she became deeply involved with Admiral Horatio Nelson while still in that marriage. Instead of her marriage crumbling, it developed into an open relationship, with the trio living together in a ménage à trois.

9. Charles II, Catherine of Braganza, & Barbara Villiers

Charles II managed to be married and publicly involved with powerful mistresses at the same time, which was hardly subtle. Because she was relatively powerless, his wife, Catherine of Braganza, had to accept Barbara Villiers, who had much more influence, as her husband's favorite mistress. Despite being pressured by Barbara, the king refused to divorce, and Catherine stayed loyal to him, even fostering amicable relationships with his later misstresses.

10. Louis XV, Marie Leszczyńska, & Madame de Pompadour

Louis XV’s relationship with Madame de Pompadour became so important that it reshaped the atmosphere of the French court. His queen, Marie Leszczyńska, remained in place, but the king’s affection and attention were clearly elsewhere. What makes this triangle memorable is that Pompadour remained an influential, close friend of the king even after the romance faded.

11. George IV, Caroline of Brunswick, & Maria Fitzherbert

Before George IV’s marriage to Caroline became plagued by scandal and mutual hatred, he had already formed a serious attachment to Maria Fitzherbert, a Catholic commoner. He continued to court Maria even while he was married, and remained deeply in love with her until his death.

12. Percy Bysshe Shelley, Harriet Westbrook, & Mary Godwin

This was one of the most talked-about romantic scandals of its time, and it had plenty of heartbreak built into it. Shelley was married to Harriet Westbrook when he fell in love with Mary Godwin, who would later become Mary Shelley. Their relationship caused a major social uproar, especially because the whole situation unfolded in such a public and emotionally messy way. It’s the kind of love triangle that feels very literary, but unfortunately for everyone involved, it was very real.

13. Lord Byron, Lady Caroline Lamb, & William Lamb

Lord Byron and Lady Caroline Lamb created one of the most notorious romantic scandals of the Regency era. Caroline was married to William Lamb, yet her affair with Byron became highly visible and emotionally explosive. Byron’s reputation didn’t exactly calm things down, and Caroline’s obsession made the story even more intense.

14. Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, & Cristina Kahlo

Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera already had a famously turbulent marriage, so adding Frida’s sister Cristina into the story made it even more painful. Diego’s affair with Cristina was a deep betrayal that hit Frida on a very personal level. The emotional damage from that triangle shows up in how people still talk about their relationship now.

15. Ingrid Bergman, Petter Lindström, & Roberto Rossellini

Ingrid Bergman’s marriage to Petter Lindström collapsed after she fell in love with filmmaker Roberto Rossellini, and the public reaction was intense. What made this triangle especially famous was how shocking it seemed to many people at the time. Bergman’s image took a serious hit, at least temporarily, because the media framed it as her "betraying her family."

16. Elizabeth Taylor, Debbie Reynolds, & Eddie Fisher

This triangle became one of Hollywood’s most talked-about scandals because the people involved were so famous, and the friendships made it worse. Eddie Fisher left Debbie Reynolds and became involved with Elizabeth Taylor, which turned private pain into massive public gossip. The situation was discussed everywhere because it felt glamorous and cruel at the same time. You can see why it stayed lodged in pop culture memory.

17. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, & Lucy Mercer

This was a deeply consequential triangle, not a neat before-and-after romance. Franklin Roosevelt was married to Eleanor Roosevelt, but his long relationship with Lucy Mercer became one of the most painful betrayals in their marriage. Even after the affair was discovered, the emotional complications never fully disappeared.

18. Tsar Alexander II, Empress Maria Alexandrovna, & Princess Catherine Dolgorukova

Alexander II remained married to the sickly Empress Maria Alexandrovna while carrying on a long, highly controversial relationship with Princess Catherine Dolgorukova. The affair became widely known and deeply uncomfortable at court, especially because it continued so openly during the empress’s lifetime. Catherine even lived in the Winter Palace, which caused deep emotional pain to the Empress and created severe tension between Alexander II and his children.

19. Charles, Diana, & Camilla

Few triangles have been more publicly examined than this one. Charles’s marriage to Diana unfolded under a global spotlight due to Charles's decades-long affair with Camilla. The story was painful, scandalous, and impossible for the public to stop following. Even now, it remains one of the most famous royal triangles of the modern era.

20. Jacqueline Kennedy, Aristotle Onassis, & Maria Callas

Aristotle Onassis’s relationships with both Maria Callas and Jacqueline Kennedy helped create one of the most talked-about romantic shifts of the twentieth century. Callas was widely seen as the woman left behind when Onassis married Jacqueline, which gave the story an extra layer of intrigue. Because all three names carried so much fame, the triangle became bigger than the people themselves.
