When we think of the Age of Discovery, it's easy to think in the past tense. For the most part, the intrepid explorers of old have long since returned home or been lost to history. But these tales of wonder, ships full of explorers and caravans that seem like a bygone time, are very much still with us.
Every year, archaeologists discover new artifacts that reveal insights into long-lost civilizations. Shipwrecks, objects, and even entire cities are found on a regular basis, from the depths of the ocean to the depths of the jungle, revealing to us new truths about our past and our capabilities as a people. The latest of these discoveries was recently made in Malaysia, where the remains of an ancient Malay ship were found off the coast of Pulau Melaka.
Discovery of the Ancient Malay Vessel
The shipwreck was found off Pulau Melaka and described as one of Malaysia’s most important archaeological finds in recent years. The ship is estimated to be between 50 and 70 meters in length, and is believed to date back to the 13th century, when Melaka was a bustling maritime port bridging trade from the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. The vessel could have been involved in regional trade networks at the time, experts say, bringing spices, textiles, and other products between the Malay Archipelago, China, and the Middle East.
Early analysis has determined that the ship was constructed mainly with saga wood, a type of timber found in the Malay Archipelago. Fragments of merbau, a dense tropical hardwood also used for shipbuilding, were also present.
A Voyage of Discovery
The Pulau Melaka shipwreck is now among a small but exclusive club of world-famous shipwrecks. The Kyrenia Shipwreck is one of the most famous shipwrecks in the world. Andreas Cariolou, a diving instructor from Kyrenia on Cyprus, first discovered the site in 1965 when he was searching for antiquities in shallow water off the coast of Cyprus. Archaeologists and students from the University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Anthropology, along with the Cyprus Department of Antiquities, conducted the excavation of the Greek merchant ship, which was estimated to be about 2,300 years old.
The ship and the majority of its contents were extremely well preserved. The two-masted vessel was subsequently raised and is now located in the Kyrenia Castle Museum. The shape of the ship was well documented, and using drawings, a full-size replica called Kyrenia I was constructed using traditional materials and tools. Kyrenia II and Kyrenia Liberty followed, with Kyrenia Liberty launched in 2002. The shipwreck and its replicas contributed to our understanding of ancient shipbuilding, trade, and the progression of naval architecture and Mediterranean commerce.
The Cape Gelidonya Shipwreck is another discovery that advanced maritime archaeology. Found off the coast of Turkey by a sponge diver in 1954, the Gelidonya Wreck was the first ancient shipwreck excavated underwater. In 1959, the shipwreck was excavated by George Bass, later known as the father of nautical archaeology, and archaeologist Joan du Plat Taylor. The wreck is thought to have been Phoenician, and the cargo of bronze tools and ingots found on board led to many findings about metal trade and shipbuilding in the ancient world.
The Importance of Ancient Wrecks
They are the footprints of early trade routes between East and West, from the Mediterranean to Southeast Asia. Each wreck has its own tale to tell: insights into how people did business, what ships were made of, where they came from, and what they carried. Pulau Melaka is Malaysia's latest addition to this worldwide collection of shipwrecks. Research and conservation continue on this time capsule as a reminder that not only has our spirit of exploration endured through the centuries, it’s also not over yet. There’s still plenty to discover out there!
