Remembering dates and places throughout history is already hard enough, but toss in several different Annes, Georges, and Charles, and suddenly your head is caught in a whirlwind. The truth is, there are some names that just show up frequently in history books. You may read through a few chapters, and suddenly there's another historical figures with the same name! Here are just 20 of them, showing just how strong of legacy they carry.

1. Alexander

Alexander is one of those names that history never really let go of, largely because Alexander the Great left such a huge mark on the ancient world. He might be the most notable Alexander, but there are plenty of other rulers, nobles, saints, and generals who kept coming across Europe and more.

2. Henry

Henry appears so often in history that you can almost predict you'll run into several of them in any era. Just look at the long line of English kings! You've got Henry II, Henry V, and Henry VIII to name a few. But beyond England, the name was common among rulers in France, Germany, and the Holy Roman Empire as well.

As a name that's already popular present day, it's no surprise that John was used so widely throughout the past, too.

4. Charles

From Charles Darwin to Charlemagne and Charles I of England, this is another name that seemed permanently assigned to crowns, courts, and major political players in history. Across several different eras, Charles is consistently associated with strong powers and men with high reputations.

5. Louis

If we're talking French history, it's impossible not to go through a few Louises. So many French kings bore the name that it became almost a symbol of monarchy in its own right, with Louis XIV leaving behind the biggest impression.

At many turning points throughout history, William seems to turn up, almost with utmost certainty. Just take William the Conqueror for example, which is enough to secure the name's place, but there are also plenty of other kings, reformers, and political leaders who share this name, too.

James has a strong historical presence because it traveled so well through royal, religious, and political settings. You see it in the Stuart monarchs, in colonial-era figures, and in American history through presidents and public leaders. Even today, it's a name that remains strong and sturdy!

Most people today think George is such a simple and standard name, but the truth is, it carries important weight through history. A name that appeared not just a few centuries ago, but even as far back as ancient history, Philip is an unavoidable one. You meet Philip II of Macedon before you ever get to Alexander's career, and later the name even comes up repeatedly in Spanish and French dynastic history.

As far as women's names go, you won't come across one in historical writing more prominent than Catherine. It's attached to so many memorable personalities! From Catherine the Great to Catherine de' Medici, and Catherine of Aragon, this name is tied to so many different historical roles and positions.

Mary appears everywhere in history for religious as well as political reasons.
