Alexander is one of those names that history never really let go of, largely because Alexander the Great left such a huge mark on the ancient world. He might be the most notable Alexander, but there are plenty of other rulers, nobles, saints, and generals who kept coming across Europe and more.

2. Henry

Henry appears so often in history that you can almost predict you'll run into several of them in any era. Just look at the long line of English kings! You've got Henry II, Henry V, and Henry VIII to name a few. But beyond England, the name was common among rulers in France, Germany, and the Holy Roman Empire as well.

3. John

As a name that's already popular present day, it's no surprise that John was used so widely throughout the past, too.

You can find it among kings, popes, philosophers, rebels, poets, and presidents, which means the name crosses nearly every historical category you can think of.

From Charles Darwin to Charlemagne and Charles I of England, this is another name that seemed permanently assigned to crowns, courts, and major political players in history. Across several different eras, Charles is consistently associated with strong powers and men with high reputations.

If we're talking French history, it's impossible not to go through a few Louises. So many French kings bore the name that it became almost a symbol of monarchy in its own right, with Louis XIV leaving behind the biggest impression.

James has a strong historical presence because it traveled so well through royal, religious, and political settings. You see it in the Stuart monarchs, in colonial-era figures, and in American history through presidents and public leaders. Even today, it's a name that remains strong and sturdy!

8. George

Most people today think George is such a simple and standard name, but the truth is, it carries important weight through history. There were plenty of British kings that made the name royal and prominent, but there were also iconic American historical figures like George Washington that furthered the name's legacy.

9. Richard

Both Richard the Lionheart and Richard III left such strong impressions, even though they were very different figures. As a result, the name Richard is often tied to accounts of war, succession, and political struggle. It's safe to say whenever you come across a Richard in the history books, there's a decent chance the surrounding chapter isn't especially calm.

Mary appears everywhere in history for religious as well as political reasons. A number of queens, nobles, and ordinary women carried it across centuries, and even in political history, you quickly run into figures like Mary, Queen of Scots and Mary I of England, both of whom left strong and complicated legacies.

13. Elizabeth

A name everyone is familiar with, Elizabeth I of England alone made the name unforgettable in modern time. But aside from her, plenty of queens and royal figures have kept the name alive. It's also appeared numerous times outside of the monarchy, showcasing its broad reach throughout history.

A name so common in historical writing, you can easily find it in nearly every period of European history. No one was excluded from using it; queens, noblewomen, writers, and political figures all carried the name, from Anne Boleyn to Queen Anne.
