2. Diane de Poitiers

King Henry II of France was so utterly devoted to this woman that he wore her colors, black and white, for most of his adult life. Even though she was much older than he, she held a position of authority that completely sidelined his actual queen, Catherine de Medici. She was the one who handled the royal correspondence and even signed official documents with the joint name "Henri-Diane."

3. Anne Boleyn

Everyone knows Henry VIII destroyed the Catholic Church so he could marry Anne Boleyn. But she didn’t just sit around waiting for him; she held out for the throne. Practicality forced Henry to reorder England’s government and religion to accommodate Anne’s demands.

4. Madame du Barry
