The Cost Of Rock And Roll: Why Woodstock '99 Was Such A Disaster

The Cost Of Rock And Roll: Why Woodstock '99 Was Such A Disaster

In July 1999, approximately 220,000 people descended upon the former Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, New York, expecting to celebrate the 30th anniversary of peace, love, and music. Instead, they encountered what many now call "the day the Nineties died."

What changed a music festival intended to honor the iconic 1969 Woodstock into a catastrophic nightmare of violence, destruction, and trauma? The answer lies in a storm of corporate greed, environmental challenges, and cultural tensions.

The Corporate Catastrophe

Unlike the original Woodstock, the 1999 iteration was designed with profit as the primary motivation. Promoter John Scher, who had lost money on Woodstock '94, was determined to turn a profit this time around. This financial focus led to numerous cost-cutting measures and price-gouging tactics that created a hostile atmosphere before a single note was played.

Water became a precious commodity as temperatures soared to nearly 100 degrees. Festival organizers charged exorbitant prices for bottled water while failing to provide adequate free water stations, resulting in 25-minute lines at fountains. Food was similarly overpriced, with personal pan pizzas selling for $12.

The venue itself—a decommissioned concrete airbase—was wholly unsuitable for a summer festival. With little shade and heat radiating off the tarmac, the environment became dangerously uncomfortable.

Poor planning extended to sanitation, with inadequate toilet facilities and reports that human waste leaked into drinking and shower water, causing some attendees to develop "trench mouth," a painful gum infection usually associated with WWI.

A Perfect Cultural Storm

The musical lineup reflected the aggressive cultural currents of the late '90s, featuring nu-metal acts like Limp Bizkit and Korn alongside more established rock bands. Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst was later criticized for allegedly encouraging crowd aggression during his performance of "Break Stuff."

Also, the festival demographics skewed heavily male, creating what performer Jewel described as an environment dominated by "male ego." Reports of harassment and related activities mounted throughout the weekend, with women being groped and attacked in mosh pits and crowd-surfing situations.

This toxic blend of frustration, aggression, and misogyny formed the undercurrent of an increasingly volatile situation. By Sunday, the festival grounds had become a wasteland of trash, reflecting the deteriorating conditions and the collective mindset.

Flames Of Discontent

The final night became infamous when candles distributed by the anti-violence group PAX for a vigil became tools of destruction. During the Red Hot Chili Peppers' ironically timed cover of Jimi Hendrix's Fire, attendees used these candles to ignite everything from garbage piles to sections of the "Peace Fence."

Riots erupted, with festivalgoers looting vendor booths, destroying property, and setting numerous fires. The damage was extensive: approximately 12 trailers, a small bus, and multiple booths and portable toilets were burned. Some trailers contained coolant or propane tanks that exploded in the flames.

Woodstock '99 basically serves as a cautionary tale about what occurs when corporate profit takes precedence over music, community, and human happiness.
