Dark Reputations
You've probably heard of Annabelle or Robert the Doll, but history is full of cursed or haunted toys beyond the ones made popular by movies and media. Across Japan, North America, and Europe, certain playthings have become associated with unexplained movement, bad luck, or demonic spirits said to have attached themselves to them. While these stories are impossible to verify, the dolls themselves are real objects. Do you believe in the paranormal? These 20 dolls might send a chill up your spine.
1. Robert the Doll
When artist Robert Eugene "Gene" Otto received this toy as a kid in the early 1900s, he likely had no idea it would end up becoming the world's most cursed doll. Even before the notoriety Robert the Doll gained in recent years, family members and neighbors claimed that he seemed to change expressions, move between rooms, and even carry on conversations with his then-young owner. If that's not enough to freak you out, pay him a visit: he sits inside a glass case at the Fort East Martello Museum.

2. Annabelle
You might immediately think of the scary-faced doll that played Annabelle's movie counterpart, but in reality, she's actually a Raggedy Ann doll. Her legend dates all the way back to the 1970s, when her original owner began finding Annabelle in different rooms or positions, and even slipping notes to her. Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren eventually acquired Annabelle, and now display her in their occult collection.
3. Okiku
Reportedly purchased in Hokkaido in 1918 for a girl who later sadly passed, Okiku is one of Japan's best-known cursed dolls. The reason? It was believed that the young girl's spirit had entered the doll—that seemed to be the only explanation for why the doll's hair appeared to be growing longer and longer. With her incredibly long mane, Okiku was later entrusted to Mannenji Temple.
4. Mandy
After years of being locked away, Mandy found a new home in the Quesnel & District Museum in British Columbia in 1991. That's when things started going awry: shortly after her arrival, the employees reported weird experiences, from objects being disturbed to a stuffed lamb somehow leaving Mandy's locked case. Some visitors even claimed they couldn't take photos of her, and insisted that Mandy's eyes seemed to follow them around the room.
5. Letta Me Out
Just knowing that this wooden doll was discovered under an abandoned building would be spooky enough, but there's more to the legend. Found in Wagga Wagga, Australia, in 1972, "Letta Me Out," as it's nicknamed, is famous for tracking unexplained marks around the house and (like most dolls) leaving people feeling uneasy around it.
6. Peggy
Ever had nightmares or gotten a headache just from looking at a scary doll? Well, one glance at Peggy, and you'd probably wish you never did. This doll became an internet sensation after a paranormal investigator began sharing stories about it online. You didn't even have to see Peggy in person—just looking at photographs or videos of her seemingly caused disturbing experiences for people.
7. Pupa
An Italian doll that was reportedly made during the 1920s, Pupa supposedly resembles the little girl who originally owned her. Like Okiku, strange things started happening after the girl died. Though stored in a display case, the doll apparently began to shift positions and would even tap against the glass. Even creepier is the fact that some even claimed words would appear on the case.
8. Harold
You can find plenty of weird things on eBay. But perhaps no item was stranger than Harold, who was put up for sale on the site in 2003 and would later become one of the famous "haunted dolls" of the early internet era. While the seller later acknowledged making up much of the doll's spooky backstory to get people to buy it, the eventual owner Harold was handed off to said he experienced strange, unexplained activity after acquiring it.

9. Charley
Similar to Letta Me Out, Charley was reportedly discovered inside the attic of an old Victorian house in upstate New York in 1968. That might not sound so strange, if it weren't for the fact that, found along with it, were newspaper clippings and a copy of the Lord's Prayer. While that could have been merely a coincidence, the family that encountered Charley eventually began having strange experiences: the doll wouldn't just move from room to room, but it even spoke to their youngest daughter one night.
10. Joliet
Joliet's story differs from many haunted-doll tales—for one, she's stayed with the same family for several generations. Legend has it that Joliet was originally gifted to a pregnant woman by a jealous acquaintance, after which the misfortune supposedly began. Perhaps most creepy is the fact that some family members claimed they heard child-like cries coming from the doll.
11. Lilly
Before Lilly was acquired for Zak Bagans ' Haunted Museum in Las Vegas, she was a seemingly ordinary doll that came from an antique shop in Oregon. And yet, she turned out to be anything but normal. Those who came close to the doll claimed to experience night terrors and intense physical discomfort. Even now, visitors at the museum have said they've felt uneasy around her, and one guest even fainted after one look.
12. Ruby the Haunted Doll
Canadians might not be so happy to hear that there's another haunted doll that resides on their land. An early-20th-century porcelain doll, Ruby was given away by her owners after they experienced strange events; people who have handled her have even felt nauseous, sad, or just uneasy. Plus, one spooky story even claims that a young girl died while holding her!
13. The First Doll of Isla de las Muñecas
One look at Mexico's famous Island of the Dolls, and you'd already get the heebie-jeebies. But the legend actually began with a tragic story. As the saying goes, caretaker Santana Barrera reportedly hung a doll in memory of a girl who had drowned nearby, then added more to the collection over the decades. After Barrera himself passed in 2001, visitors to the island have claimed that the dolls seem to move and whisper when no one is touching them.
14. Agustina
Among the hundreds of dolls in Isla de las Muñecas, there's one that's said to be one of Barrera's favorites: Agustina. Unlike the other dolls that are strung about all over the island, she's hung closer to where he resided. And of course, Agustina, too, is not immune to the same reports of unexplained movement and voices.
15. Amanda the Doll
An antique bisque-headed doll who appeared for sale online in the early 2000s, Amanda is another doll that's sure to give you the creeps. She's reportedly switched homes many times, and several, if not all, of her previous owners have blamed her for nightmares, scratches, and even changes in her facial expression. Although those claims aren't verified, you can see how she has become somewhat infamous!
16. Suzy Doll
Suzy was a large handmade doll given to a little girl in 1983, and while that might sound like a normal story, it was anything but. The subsequent experiences the family would later face would even end up as an episode of Paranormal Witness. According to them, after Suzy came into their home, furniture would shift overnight, disturbing sounds would come from different rooms, and Suzy herself would even appear in places where nobody left her.
17. Sally of St. Augustine
Ready to hear about another allegedly active haunted doll? Meet Sally of St. Augustine, a doll that belongs to, as her name suggests, a paranormal collection in St. Augustine, Florida. While she's not quite as notoriously known as Robert the Doll or even Okiku, investigators and visitors alike have reported getting strange responses around her during paranormal sessions.
18. Norman the Doll
Fans of the TV series A Haunting might be familiar with this doll. Named Norman, this vintage Mattel Matty the Talking Boy from the early 1960s became widely known after a paranormal investigator's experiences with it were televised to the world. Though it's a mass-produced toy and not a vintage antique, those who have been around Norman have reported hearing unexplained noises or unsettling movement and activity.
19. Emilia
Emilia is not only an antique doll, but apparently also once belonged to Italy's royal family. Like other dolls on this list, stories surrounding Emilia claim that people near her have heard unexplained noises or witnessed unusual movement, although the details of her history are vague and difficult to prove. But the fact she was technically once considered royalty is jaw-dropping enough!
20. Fofão
Not every cursed-doll story centers on a single entity. In fact, Brazil's Fofão dolls became a widespread urban legend during the late 1980s, when rumors spread that some of them were somehow connected with dark rituals and housed a hidden dagger that they would then unleash at night to hurt sleeping children. Though it might sound absurd, Fofão remains one of the country's best-known examples of a supposedly cursed toy.
