20 Popular Foods Throughout History That Were Made By Mistake
How Many Of Your Favorite Foods Were Happy Accidents?
Even the most sought-after and beloved foods started as nothing more than accidents, not careful planning or culinary genius. From staples like bread to comforting delights like chocolate chip cookies, history is full of delicious mistakes that became timeless classics. Here are 20 popular foods with accidental origins
1. Puff Pastry
Flaky and buttery puff pastry, which is made by repeatedly folding fat into dough, is thought to have been invented by a French pastry cook in the 17th century. When making a special bread for his sick father, who was instructed to only eat butter, flour, and water, he folded the butter into the dough and baked it. To his surprise, it puffed up and formed a thousand beautiful layers.

2. Chocolate Chip Cookies
Chocolate chip cookies were invented in 1938 by Ruth Graves Wakefield, who ran the Toll House Inn. The story goes that when she was making her famous butterscotch cookies, she decided last-minute to add some chocolate to the mix, expecting it to melt and form chocolate cookies. However, the chunks stayed whole, and the chocolate chip cookie was born.

3. Tarte Tatin
The tarte tatin, an upside-down caramel apple tart, was invented by accident by the Tatin sisters at their Hotel Tatin in 19th-century France. The story goes that one of the sisters, while preparing a traditional apple tart, left the apples cooking too long and forgot to line the pastry tin, so she just threw the pastry dough on top of the apples cooking in the pan and tossed the whole thing in the oven.
4. Bread
Bread is one of humanity's oldest prepared foods, its origins dating back to the Neolithic era. What most likely happened was that someone left a mixture of ground grains and water sitting out too long, and it attracted natural airborne yeasts. They cooked it anyway and found that it became light, airy, and full of flavor.
5. Yogurt
Another fermented food, yogurt, likely came about shortly after the domestication of cows in around 6000 BC. It was likely the product of naturally occurring bacteria from spoiled milk, which people discovered made milk last longer, aided in digestion, and had a pleasant sour taste.
6. Beer
Beer is one of the oldest alcoholic beverages, originating in the Neolithic era. When humans were cultivating grains like barley and wheat, they would soak them in water to make a sort of porridge, but when the mixture was left too long, it would become foamy and fermented. People found it had a pleasant, intoxicating effect and lasted longer than fresh grain or water.
7. Tofu
Tofu likely dates back to the Han Dynasty in China, about 2,000 years ago. It was invented by a cook who combined soy milk with a mineral salt derived from seaweed called nigari. The magnesium chloride in the nigari caused the soy milk to unexpectedly curdle, forming a solid, squishy cheese-like block.
8. Corn Flakes
The classic breakfast cereal, Corn Flakes, was invented by the Kellogg brothers by accident in 1894 when they were experimenting with different ingredients to make bland, digestible, and healthy foods. One night, they accidentally left cooked wheat out, which staled by the time they discovered it. They rolled the wheat expecting it to become sheets, but it flaked into crispy pieces instead.
9. Brownies
One of America's favorite desserts, the brownie, is said to have been invented by accident in the 1890s. The story goes that a cook forgot to add baking powder to a chocolate cake, which resulted in the dense and fudgy square we know and love today.
10. Cheese
Cheese most likely came about soon after humans started domesticating animals for milk in 6,000 BC. People used to transport milk in a container made from animal intestines, which naturally contains rennet, the enzyme that promotes coagulation in cheese. The milk curdled into a solid form that people found had a pleasant taste and lasted longer than fresh milk.
11. Crêpes Suzette
The impressive orange-butter flambéed French dessert, Crêpes Suzette, is said to have been created by accident in 1895. While serving the Prince of Wales and his companion, Suzette, a waiter was flambéing a sauce tableside, and he accidentally set the crêpes it was supposed to accompany on fire. He played it cool, serving them anyway, and the prince loved the dramatic presentation.
12. Pink Lemonade
Pink lemonade first appeared in the late 19th century in the US. The story goes that a worker accidentally dropped a red fruit or candy into a batch of lemonade at a fair, and people loved the novel color.
13. Chimichangas
Chimichangas are essentially crispy burritos. They likely originated at a Tex-Mex restaurant in Arizona in the 1950s when a cook accidentally dropped a burrito into a deep fryer.
14. Green Apples
Green apples were the result of an accidental mutation. The story goes that a gardener by the name of Marie Ann Smith in Australia found a wild seedling producing tart green apples in the same spot where she had thrown away some bad seedlings. She decided to cultivate the seeds and found the apple variety to be highly desirable.
15. Saccharin
Saccharin was the first artificial sweetener ever created. It was discovered by a chemist in 1879 who was experimenting with coal tar derivatives and forgot to wash his hands before dinner. He noticed his hands had turned his bread unexpectedly sweet.
16. Worcestershire Sauce
Worcestershire sauce was created in the 19th century by John Lea and William Perrins, who were inspired by sauces they had tasted in India and wanted to replicate them. Their first attempt tasted so bad, they left it in barrels and forgot about it for several years, during which it fermented. When they rediscovered it, they found the flavors had mellowed and it was rich, complex, and packed with umami flavor.
17. Cheese Puffs
Cheese puffs came about after a company invented a machine that crushed grains for animal feed in the 1930s. When the machine got too hot, the corn would come out in puffy strands that would become crispy when cool. Instead of throwing them out, a worker added oil and seasoning to them.
18. Slurpees
The Slurpee was accidentally invented by a Dairy Queen manager in Kansas in the 1950s. He kept his sodas in the freezer to keep them cool, and his customers loved the partially frozen drinks. He created a machine to keep his sodas partially frozen and slushy all the time.
19. Champagne
Even champagne was invented by accident by a monk in 1693, who was trying to make regular wine. He couldn't get rid of the bubbles, which naturally occurred from fermentation.

20. Nachos
Nachos were created by accident in 1940s Mexico. A group of American military wives walked into a restaurant after closing, and the maître d’ (nicknamed Nacho) improvised a snack with whatever he had on hand. He cut tortillas into triangles, covered them with cheese and sliced jalapenos, and threw them in the oven.
